Be Water - Iconografia di una protesta

It is a series of portraits realised along the streets of Hong Kong during the protest sparked by the bill proposed by the Hong Kong government in February 2019 to establish a mechanism for transfers of fugitives not only for Taiwan but also for Mainland China and Macau.

From the beginning, Chinese and Western propaganda described the movement as composed of students. On the one hand, they defined them as spoiled and ungrateful to their mother country students. But, on the other hand, students were described as brave young martyrs.

However, unlike the two propagandas, the reality was different. People of all ages and social backgrounds took to the streets. From the clerk to the bricklayer. From student to retired. An entire society had moved. Through the portraits, I tried to underline the diversity within that movement isolating the people from the mass.

“Storyteller, photographer, photojournalist, documentary photographer: I could use one of those definitions or all of them. I don’t know. What I know is I am passionate about ordinary and extraordinary people, historical events, and places. Photography is my favourite medium to satisfy my curiosity and tell what I have learnt about the world I was lucky to be born in.”
