Be Water
During the 2019 protest in Hong Kong, propaganda played an important role. One of the most important aspects was the description of the movement.
For the Chinese media and government mouthpiece, the movement was made up of a papered, English speaker bunch of students in league with foreign forces.
On the other side, western media and politicians described the movement as a heroic and brave movement of students fighting for freedom and human rights.
The narrative from both sides was talking only about students. The reality was different.
I began taking portraits, isolating the protestors from the mass with a white background to describe the complexity of the movement. A movement made up of an entire society, workers, employees, homemakers, students, and artists, from the youngest to the elderly.
